Browser Customisation

You can customise your browser to make it easier for you to use the internet. Please follow the instructions below for the latest PC internet browsers. This should work on most websites. If you have problems changing your settings, use the Help menu in your browser toolbar.

Changing text size

How to make the text larger in your web browser - below you will find a step-by-step guide to enlarging the text in your internet browser. These instructions are for use with the browser versions listed below, however they may also work with other versions of the same web browser.

Microsoft Internet Explorer - all versions

  • Open your Internet Explorer web browser.
  • Choose the drop down menu at the top of the window of the browser marked "view" (or press 'Alt' and 'V').
  • A list of options will appear in the drop down menu, choose "text size" (or press 'X').
  • Next another drop down menu should appear with options including "small", "medium", "large", "largest".
  • Select "largest" (or use the 'up' and 'down' arrows to select and press 'Enter').

Mozilla Firefox - all versions

  • Open your Firefox web browser.
  • Hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard and press the plus (+) key.
  • You will find that this will enlarge the text, to enlarge again repeat the procedure.
  • Keep repeating until the text is enlarged to your requirements.
  • If you need to make the text smaller press ctrl on your keyboard and the minus (-) key.

The text in your browser window should now appear larger.

Apple Safari - all versions

  • Open your Apple Safari web browser.
  • Hold down the Apple Key and press the (+) key.
  • You will find that this will enlarge the text, to enlarge again repeat the procedure.
  • Keep repeating until the text is enlarged to your requirements.
  • If you need to make the text smaller press the Apple Key on your keyboard and press the (-) key.

The text in your browser window should now appear larger.

Permanently Apply Font And Colour Change

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the General tab, select 'Accessibility'
  3. Click on the three boxes to show ticks
  4. Click on 'OK'

Change Text And Background Colour

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the General tab, select 'Colour'
  3. Deselect the 'Use Windows Colours' tick box
  4. Select the box next to 'Text' and choose a colour
  5. Click on 'OK'
  6. Select the box next to 'Background' and choose a colour
  7. Click on 'OK'

Prevent Graphics And Images Appearing

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the 'Multimedia' heading
  3. Deselect the graphics options 'animations', 'videos', 'pictures' and 'images' by clicking on the boxes to remove the ticks
  4. Click on 'Apply' then 'OK'

Change The Size Of The Window

  1. On the browser View menu select 'Full screen' or press F11

Change The Colour Of The Links Displayed On A Screen

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the General tab, select 'Accessibility'
  3. Click on 'Select ignore colours specified on Web pages' (should contain a tick)
  4. Click 'OK'
  5. Select 'General' tab and click on 'Colours'
  6. Turn off the 'Use hover colours' tick box (should not contain a tick)
  7. Select 'Visited' and choose the colour that suits you best, Click OK
  8. Select 'Not Visited' and choose the colour that suits you best, Click OK
  9. Select 'OK' for 'Colours'
  10. Select 'OK' for 'Internet Options'

Other Options

Other options such as removing animation are available:

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the Advanced tab choose any of the options available to improve the visibility of the web pages.

If you have any problems changing your browser settings, use the Help menu in your browser toolbar.

Adjust Font Face and Size

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Options'
  2. On the Content tab, select 'Advanced' button
  3. Select the font face and size of your choosing
  4. IMPORTANT: Deselect the box "Allow pages to choose their own fonts....."
  5. Click on 'OK', and then 'OK' again.

Adjust Colours for Fonts, Background and Links

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Options'
  2. On the Content tab, select 'Colours' button
  3. Select the colours of the elements you wish to change
  4. IMPORTANT: Deselect the box "Allow pages to choose their own colours....."
  5. Click on 'OK', and then 'OK' again.

Prevent Graphics and Images Appearing

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Options'
  2. On the Content tab, deselect the 'Load images automatically' box
  3. Click on 'OK', and then 'OK' again.
