What's On The Course?

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography is a practical work-based qualification. You learn by completing practical projects and assignments that build up your photographic knowledge and skill-base. The course is designed to explore a range of traditional and digital media in genres such as fashion, documentary and forensic photography.

Students will experience working with a range of digital imaging hardware and software that will enable them to scan, manage and manipulate their imagery.

Learners will also undertake studio and location based photography, learning lighting and exposure control. These workshops are supported by gallery visits, exhibitions, visiting photographers, location shoots and residentials.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography is a full-time course for students who are seeking a career in Photography and Media and who enjoy a hands-on, practical approach to a range of subjects, materials and processes. The course allows students to explore a wide range of Photographic practise before deciding upon the specialist area(s) they wish to study at a higher level.

What Are The Entry Requirements?

For the Extended Diploma (2 years) you will need a minimum of:

i) 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language/Literature (or L2 functional literacy),
ii) or a Level 2 Diploma (Merit) + 2 GCSEs grade A*-C,
iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate (Merit) + 3 GCSEs grade A*-C,

plus at least a grade D in GCSE Maths (or L1 functional numeracy pass).

For the Subsidiary Diploma (1 year) you will need a minimum of:

i) 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language/Literature (or L2 functional literacy),
ii) or a Level 2 Diploma (Pass) + 1 GCSE grade A*-C,
iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate (Pass) + 2 GCSEs grade A*-C,

plus at least a grade E in GCSE Maths.

In all cases a portfolio of personal photographic work is also required.

The range of work produced as part of the course will provide the necessary evidence for students wishing to gain a place on University Photographic courses.
