Students Screen Mini Marxist Productions

Students have been putting their own slant on the Marxist View of Education by creating their own short video productions.

Sociology students at high-flying South Cheshire College made their own Windows Movie Maker productions as part of a major course module called 'Education and Research Methods.'

Many of the students, from three separate Sociology classes, produced the professional-standard films in less than two weeks, despite not being familiar with the Windows Movie Maker software package.

Their task was to research into Marxist writers such as Boudon, Bordieu, Bowles and Gintis and Althusser and create a short, informative and entertaining video using a whole range of images, text and audio.

Many of these writers were plying their trade during the 1970s when there was a crisis in capitalism.

Cinema tickets and HMV vouchers worth over £40 were presented to the winning team of students which included Nat Bradshaw, 17, Jodie Hopkins, 16, Jenny Murray, 16, and Emily Welch,16.

Dr Julian Salisbury, Sociology Tutor at South Cheshire College, said: "All the students deserve a great deal of credit because the standard of films they have produced in such a short space of time is phenomenal.

"They planned their productions carefully before putting them together and converting the final versions from Windows Movie Maker into video files.

"I judged each video and marked them on accuracy of the content, the visual appeal and the creativity behind each one."

Sociology is a popular A-Level subject at South Cheshire College and many students go on to high-flying careers in different employment sectors.

Marxism is an economic and social system based upon the political and economic theories of Karl Marx who devised theories relating to education and religion.

Dr Salisbury added: "The purpose of the project was to help students familiarise themselves with the theorists and build up their confidence on the Marxist view of education in preparation for their summer exam.

"Considering that the groups had received little in the way of formal training on how to use Windows Movie Maker, and this was something completely different from their normal assignments, their finished work was outstanding."
