Topping-out ceremony - October 2009

South Cheshire College has celebrated a key milestone in its new campus development project.

The high-flying college hosted a 'topping-out' ceremony on the site of its new £74 million campus, less than a year after construction work started on the project.

Cheshire East Mayor Margaret Simon and Crewe Mayor Dorothy Flude joined College Principal Peter Swift and Chair of the Corporation Board Ken Lea at the special event.

During the ceremony the final planters were laid on the roof of the new building C which are just one of the environmental sustainability elements of the new campus.

BAM Construction are the main building contractors for the new campus which will be one of the finest education buildings in the country when it opens its doors in September 2010.

All members of the party were given protective clothing and footwear on arrival at the BAM site offices adjacent to the new campus before heading up for the roof-top ceremony.

In December 2008 the College staged a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the official start of building work.

Nigel Peet, Director of Operations and Campus Development, said: "This ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate the unbelievable progress which has been made on our new campus since building work officially started last December.

"The project is on schedule and BAM have done a fantastic job to ensure that we will be ready for September 2010."

The new campus is a semi-circular design with a huge glass atrium at the front of the building and a street of student facilities in the shape of an arc.

Facilities on offer include four different cafes, a new bistro and restaurant, a fully-equipped fitness suite, a college shop, a new child care centre, a 300-seat theatre and a conference centre, a sports hall and hair and beauty salons.

Every classroom will be equipped with computing and audio visual equipment and a contemporary library will house facilities for every type of learning and study.
